Picking the right vendors for you and your fiancé is crucial because each person or company play an important role on that big wedding day. Of course, one of the most important roles is that of your wedding photographer, since the photographer(s) will be with you more than any other vendor. They are responsible for not only capturing the emotion of the day but for providing that shoulder to lean on when you need help—so, where do you even begin to find one?
I always advise couples to look at wedding websites like The Knot and Wedding Wire for their research. There’s also no substitute for reading recent reviews, and you should always check the number of reviews as well. If a company has a 5-star rating with hundreds of reviews, it’s a pretty safe choice!
It’s also a good idea to simply ask around. If you have been to a wedding that you felt had a good photographer—or even if you’ve just seen good wedding pictures from a friend’s event—just ask! Friends, family members, and coworkers are all great resources and can tell you their experience from a client viewpoint instead of having to rely on website blurbs.
Once you’ve found a vendor you’re interested in, reach out to them to talk about packages and options. It’s always a good idea at this stage to make sure that they have a decent website, not just a Facebook page. Avoid sites like Yelp (unless you’re looking for a good place to eat) and stay away from Craiglist ads. I can’t tell you how often I’ve seen couples get scammed or have horrible experiences, and it can all be avoided with a little research! Check the Better Business Bureau, and they’ll tell you if a vendor has any serious complaints filed against them, too.
If you can, try to always meet a photographer at their studio. That is the best place to see their work and get a feel for them as a company and team. If they only do consults at their home, they are probably not a well-established business.
A lot of times, picking out a wedding photographer can feel like buying your first home or choosing the perfect wedding dress. Sometimes, you just know they are the ones for you the moment you walk in the door and get that feeling of comfort and security. You know they’ll do a great job and are excited to work with them.
